28MM PROJECT: WOMEN IN FAVELA MORRO DA PROVIDENCIA
Paris based artist/photgrapher JR was encouraged by the context of favelas to give a face to the women for whom crime, violent loss of loved ones and arbitrary repression are part of everyday life. He chose Favela da Providencia, the first favela of Rio de Janeiro and one of the most dagerous, to host the 28MM project on Women.
Through the portraits of the women, coming from different origins and generations, JR tells their stories and makes us understand their vision of life in the context of conflict. The technique used is simple – the portraits become oversized prints which are pasted on the architecture with the help of the community in order to give a face to the favela.
The art project is completely independent and not sponsored by any institution or brand. The photographer Mauricio Hora, born and raised in Providencia, has been responsible for the realization of the project locally together with Rosiete Marinho, another local leader.
